The EU has condemned rebel attempts to overthrow the democratically elected government in the West African state of Sierra Leone

In a statement issued by the German presidency, the Union reiterated its support for President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, called on all countries to respect existing arms embargoes and offered humanitarian aid to those affected by the fighting.
