Book abstract:

This book provides an introduction to the historical and theoretical reasons for European Monetary Union. It examines the original decision by the EEC to adopt European Monetary Union and goes on to assess the euro's qualities as a currency and the institutional arrangements and implications for countries in and outside of the eurozone. It also includes an assessment of the euro's first eighteen months in operation.

The book is divided into five parts. Part 1 examines the historical and theoretical background, including the EU's earlier attempts at monetary union and the 'Snake' arrangement. Part 2 looks at further developments towards the creation of the euro followed by part 3 that examines the euro itself. This includes coverage of practical considerations surrounding the euro, the European system of Central Banks and the European Central Bank, and the capital markets and banking. Part 4 examines the initial experience of the euro and its future and includes coverage of those countries who have both opted to adopt or not adopt the euro. Finally a critical assessment of the first eighteen months is provided including a look at political and related issues. The book includes an appendix of related documents and legislation.

The book is aimed at those requiring an introduction to the euro including students of European politics and economics. Peter Coffey is the holder of the US West chair at the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis and St Paul, USA.
