The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development:

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was established as the primary lending institution to assist the transformation of the states of Central and Eastern Europe from command to market economies. This original study examines the EBRD's goals, strategies and policies.

It is also concerned with the political infighting between the main shareholders of the EBRD ... the United States and the states of the European Union ... and how this infighting over economic ideology and status continues to impact upon the states of Central and Eastern Europe and their long-term ability to make this transition. The author argues from a Gramscian perspective, that a battle of a broader nature is being fought through the mechanisms of the EBRD. Finally, the author considers the role of the EBRD in the future and explores the implications for the broad security of Europe in the twenty-first century.

The six chapters are: Studying the transformation of Central Europe: the role of the EBRD; The world before, and after, 1989; Creation and conflict - first year EBRD blues; 1991 and onwards - a new beginning or old news?; Foretelling the future?; A concluding tale: the fate of the EBRD.
