The European Commission has agreed to grant up to 100 million ecu

to help rebuild Chernobyl's damaged protective sarcophagus. The decision followed calls by the G7 group of rich industrial nations in Denver this June to contribute 280 million ecu to the 700 million ecu repair costs. But the Commission stressed that it did not favour a nuclear solution to Ukraine's energy problems.
