The full Commission gave its approval to Portugal's and Italy's 'stability programmes' yesterday (3 February), but warned both administrations that they would have to make further spending cuts or tax increases during the current period of economic growth if they were to keep to the rules of the growth and stability pact. The Commission also gave its blessing to 'convergence programmes' from Sweden and the UK. EU finance ministers will discuss the programmes at their meeting next Monday (8 February).
