The European Commission this week proposed a warning system to deal with future crises such as the far-right’s entry into government in Austria.

Michel Barnier, the Commissioner responsible for the treaty reform talks, suggested introducing a surveillance and warning mechanism which would allow member states to take preventative action in response to a suspected breach of the Union's fundamental principles.
