The European Commission this week unveiled its plans for a European Food Authority, the centrepiece of measures designed to restore public confidence in the wake of the mad cow disease and dioxin scandals.

The proposal, drawn up jointly by Health Commissioner David Bryne and enterprise chief Erkki Liikanen, is part of plans for a comprehensive policy covering the entire food chain, from farm to fork.

The Commission hopes the body will have about 250 staff and a budget of €40 million within three years.
