Abstract:

The author has been a teacher of EC competition law for twelve years in the postgraduate European Business Law programme of the Amsterdam Law School during which time he has developed his own cases reader. This book brings the benefits of that reader to a wider audience and aims to provide Legal Masters students throughout Europe with a selection of case law that will be of direct help when studying the subject for the first time.

Cases have been chosen on the basis of their contribution to the development of one of the doctrines or notions so important to the understanding of EC competition law. They are incorporated with their key recitals and texts only to ensure the text is of a digestible amount appropriate to an introductory course in EC competition law. Each case is given its relevance within the legal system and is accompanied by a short summary of its facts and circumstances. Cross references are made wherever practical, which refer to further cases on the same issue, to leading scholarly articles on the subject and to interesting annotations adding to the understanding of any particular case. This style presents the opportunity of further reading for those who would find this useful, without delaying students with extra obligatory reading material. It also offers invaluable and time-saving background information for practitioners or corporate in-house counsel in EC competition law.

The book will be useful to students of EC competition law, and to practitioners and corporate counsel engaged in this increasingly important field of law.

F.O.W. Vogelaar is Professor of Economic Regulation, with emphasis on EC and Dutch competition law, at the University of Amsterdam.
