Abstract:

This book, part of the 'Oxford Studies in European Law' series which aims to publish important and original research on EU law, is the first to deal with the mid-term review of the Common Agricultural Policy.

The work is organised in two parts spread over six chapters. Part one deals with the chronological sequence of policy and legislation development that have given rise to the European Model of Agriculture. Chapter one covers the early development up to 1992 and chapter two carries the reform process forward to the Berlin Summit. Chapter three takes up the story from the negotiations leading to the Berlin Summit and continues to the Mid-term Review.

Part two presents analysis of certain key features of the model. The impact of the reform process upon the two pillars and the relationship between those two pillars are examined in chapter four. Legal aspects of food safety and food quality, GMOs, and animal welfare are the focus of chapter five which also considers the changing role of agriculture in the food chain. Chapter six considers certain external implications of the model and the extent to which it meets the twin challenges of world trade and eastward enlargement.

The book will interest academics, practitioners and policy makers engaged in European law as it relates to agriculture.

Michael Cardwell is Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Leeds.
