The European Parliament’s environment committee has voted to tighten Commission proposals

on vehicle emissions and fuel quality standards. Changes adopted by the committee would make mandatory the non-binding emission limits set by the Commission for 2005 and tighten testing procedures. The report on fuel specifications calls for sulphur levels to be slashed and suggests a directive to regulate cars' emissions of carbon dioxide. The proposals will be considered by the full Parliament next month.
