Book abstract:

This book endeavours to give a comprehensive analysis of current issues relating to the coexistence of the law of the European Union, which is formed by the European Community, the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Police and Judicial Cooperation in the area of criminal matters and international law. These are the so-called three pillars of EU law.

The work is organised over four parts. The first part deals with questions relating to all three areas; the following three parts are in turn dedicated to each of the pillars of the EU. The contributions are written by European and international law practitioners and scholars who concentrate on legal and technical issues. Chapters cover such issues as international human rights and humanitarian law, and the European Union's international actions in the field of criminal cooperation. Where appropriate the contributions have been updated to take into account the developments following the European Council of Nice in December 2000.

The book will interest scholars, students, private practitioners, civil servants and those with a general interest in international law.
