Book abstract:

British imperialism, Russian imperialism, US imperialism - are these merely episodes in the continuum of imperialism as an ever present force in the field of international relations, or does the collapse of the Soviet Union present an opportunity for an alternative to the bipolar regime that regulated the second half of the twentieth century?

This work explores that opportunity and provides valuable insight into the politics and economics of relations between the EU and Latin America. The role of Mercosul is considered in the context of those relationships and the significant role that might be played in the development of a new international order. Contributors come from a wide range of disciplines but all are experienced in the field of international studies and most with a deep insight into Latin American affairs. They provide papers which cover the EU and new multilateralism, a British perspective on Europe, Mercosul and transatlantic relations, Globalisation, Argentina and Mercosul, Brazil in a globalising world, Brazilian foreign policy at the start of the twenty-first century, the international role of Mercosul II and Mercosul beyond 2000.

The book will interest academics, students, policy researchers and policy makers in the fields of international relations, the EU and Latin America.
