The EUYO announced its closure on the 12 May 2016. Chief Executive Marshall Marcus explained why a 40-year-old institution that represented the best of pan-European creativity had been silenced as from September 2016.

In a Statement by European Commissioner Tibor Navracsics on the closure of the European Union Youth Orchestra on the 12 May 2016 he said ' I would regret it if the Orchestra were to cease operations from September 2016'.

'I hope that the European Union Youth Orchestra will be able to find new sources of funding, including under the Creative Europe programme, and continue its activities. It has a proud record of promoting musical talent and cultural diversity, and its disappearance would be a great loss'.
