The EU’s justice and home affairs work programme for the next five years

The European Commission's Communication (COM(2004) 401), published in June 2004, summarised the progress made towards implementing the EU's five-year programme of action in the 'area of freedom, security and justice', as agreed at a special European Council meeting in Tampere in 1999. Issues discussed in the Committee's report included the Commission's proposals relating to civil and criminal justice matters, visas, asylum and immigration, police and customs co-operation. Due to a number of concerns identified by the Committee in the report, it was recommended that the Communication be sent for debate in the House of Commons.
