Four crises that threatened the EU were under discussion at the June 2015 European Council meeting: ‘Grexit’; the Mediterranean migration crisis; Russian aggression; and Britain’s threat to leave if the club is not reformed. Any of these issues could have dominated the European Council’s agenda: each had the potential to alter the fundamental character of the Union. While none of them was particularly new – Greece's economic and financial woes had troubled the EU for six years – they were coming to a head together and affecting each other. |
