The future of European banking:

This is the ninth in the series Monitoring European Integration from the Centre for Economic Policy Research. The authors examine the current turmoil in the European banking industry and consider where the industry is heading and the risks that lie ahead in the transition. They analyse why EU financial markets are so segmented, looking at the supply side - savings behaviour - and the demand side - the behaviour of firms. They look at the nature of the banking market today, and examine the transformation of the US banking industry, while contending that although the European banking industry will undergo major changes it is likely to remain quite different from its US counterpart. The areas of regulation and supervision are considered, examining the roles of the European Central Bank, national governments and national central banks before concluding with a chapter on the nature of European banking in the twenty-first century.
