The Future of European Democracy

Major commentary article discussing the decision by the German Constitutional Court, June 2009 relating to the issue of German ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon.

The author says that card-carrying Europeans reacted in dismay to the far-reaching ruling. But the judges have in fact done Europeans a huge service by tackling the issue of how democracy can work in the era of supranational institutions.
