The future of North-South relations. Towards sustainable economic and social development

In November 1991 the European Commission mandated the Forward Studies Unit to establish a report on the prospects of North-South relations. In accordance with this mandate, the report concentrates on the analysis of the evolution of North-South interdependencies in a changing geopolitical situation, and attempts to outline the parameters of a global strategy to avoid the risks resulting from a mishandling of these interdependencies on the basis of common concepts of good governance and global governance for the promotion of sustainable social and economic development.

The report further formulates strategic priorities for the European Community in contributing to a more coherent global approach, in line with its specific geopolitical interests and an adequate internal division of tasks. However, the report does not contain a detailed analysis of relevant Community policies or specific proposals for their reform.
