Book abstract:

Employment is the single most important issue for the European public and has risen to the top of the political agenda. Although the dire predictions about the end of work and the information technology revolution are not taken so seriously as they once were, modernisation and restructuring have continued, the process of economic globalisation has picked up speed and unemployment has left its mark.

Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to the debate, 'The Future of Work' proposes that the European institutions and the Commission in particular, should abandon short-termism and establish a new perspective, providing the framework for debate and creating the conditions for progress.

The study takes its inspiration from the work carried out over the last few years at the European Commission under the supervision of the Forward Studies Unit and the Directorate-General Employment and Social Affairs of the European Commission and is based on a report written by Patrice Sauvage, consultant in socio-economics, and supervised by Marjorie Jouen and Bénédicte Caremier of the Forward Studies Unit.

The book is split into two parts. Part I: The future of work according to the scientific literature. Part II: When European civil society debates work: results of the European Social Forum 24-26 June 1998.

This new addition to the Forward Studies Series will be of particular interest to students, scholars and professionals active in European Studies and International Relations.
