The crises in Europe’s neighbourhood seemed to get worse by the day. The decision by Russia to intervene in Syria in 2015, supposedly to fight against DAESH has raised new questions about the cohesion of the international response to the war going on in the Levant and the Middle East. While the then new turn of events could have opened the door to hard headed diplomacy as the meetings in Vienna past and future seemed to indicate, there were serious questions about the coherence of the strategy between international players and between them and the regional actors.

Otte explores how the European Union and Europe could have planned for a succesful exit and what were the stakes and the role of Europe in late 2015.
