While investigating the nature and diverse uses of the concept, this paper takes a broad and comparative historical perspective of regionalism in practice arguing that such an overview is essential to understanding its present trajectory, and its wider implications and ramifications for International Relations and International Law.

The first two sections of the paper deal accordingly with the concept and history of regionalism the second section focuses on some contemporary examples of regionalism in the security field and considers their wider implications.
