Book abstract: It might well be said that given Europe's cultural history, the history of the world has been written by Europeans. But who might we understand are Europeans? Indeed what do we understand is Europe? It is certainly more than the association of nation states that currently, or will in the near future, comprise the European Union. This work seeks to address these questions by an exploration of thousands of years of history, and along the way asserts the contribution Europe has made to the economic and social development of the rest of the world. It follows technological, sociological and economic advances that illustrate how Europe has acquired its current identity. We meet the greatest figures from all aspects of European history and enjoy interesting insights into the role they played in the social, cultural and political events of their time. The rise and fall of great empires, the religious contribution and the achievements in science and technology, then finally the European Union - all are covered. Dr John Stevenson is Fellow and Tutor in History at Worcester College, Oxford University, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. |
