Book abstract:

Despite growing harmonisation, European cultures and business environments still vary enormously. 'Working in Europe' aims to be a comprehensive guide for those seeking employment or wishing to do business abroad.

The book provides hard facts on national details and statistics for 48 European nations, insights into national characteristics and cultures, and data on important national variations with further sources of information including over 320 websites.

Key information provided includes: 'banana skins' i.e. what to watch out for, giving advice on everything from language to food, time to driving. There follows a useful section on negotiating in different countries. The volume then looks at each country individually providing basic population and economic information, information on employment, taxes, environmental and miscellaneous data of particular interest. A number of website addresses are supplied for each country providing further sources for information on, for example, employment agencies, government departments, immigration offices.

At the back of the book is a further section with useful addresses, not included elsewhere in the text. This is followed by a section of charts including information on local currencies and languages, the price of a stamp, starting salaries, income tax, property prices, and speed limits.

Altogether this is a user-friendly, highly readable book, with much useful information on different cultures and economies and would be a worthwhile investment for anyone interested in working internationally.
