Book abstract:

The aim of this book is to provide an accessible account of the contribution of Italy to the practice and literature of international law. The board of editors and contributors are academics from Italian universities.

The book begins with articles examining developments in international, national and EU law. Articles from this section include: The New European Court of Human Rights between International and Domestic Law; The International Jurisdiction of the EU Commission in the Merger Control Area; Amnesty for Crimes Against Humanity - Co-ordinating the State and Individual Responsibility for Gross Violations of Human Rights; and Impunity under National Law and Accountability under International Human Rights Law - Has the Time of a Duty to Prosecute Come? The second part of the book covers Italian practice relating to international law. This begins with Judicial Decisions including the areas of the treatment of aliens and nationality, human rights and international criminal law. The second section examines diplomatic and parliamentary practice covering areas such as international responsibility, international trade law, international organisations, and war, neutrality and disarmament. The third section, Agreements to which Italy is a Party, contains a list of agreements signed by Italy and published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale. This includes agreements either signed between 1998-1999 or which were signed earlier but came into force between 1998-1999. Finally, details of legislation passed between 1997 and 1999 are provided. The book concludes with a bibliographical index of international law with book and articles published between 1998 to 1999.
