Book abstract:

This work is set to follow in the footsteps of the first edition and will undoubtedly occupy a similarly important place in the commercial lawyer's library. The six years that have elapsed between the two editions have witnessed substantial changes in the international trade scene - the start of the World Trade Organisation, the privatisation of state-run economies, a host of new instruments and conventions and the arrival of new players on the international scene.

This volume approaches trade issues from a transnational perspective with a particular emphasis on European markets. Reflecting the changing importance of issues on the agenda since the first edition, several new subjects are featured such as the European Union Regulations on court proceedings, TRIPs and the euro and its impact on payments. With the rapid expansion of the worldwide web this latest edition also provides internet references to treaties, resolutions and reports on international trade. In the first three of the ten chapters in the book, the legal components and regulations of international trade are explained as well as the role played by international organisations and nation states. The remaining chapters focus on specific areas of international trade such as international sales; distribution agreements; foreign investment; the finance of international trade and international payments.

Offering an overview of all main topics within the area of international trade law, this publication will serve as a useful reference work for lawyers, solicitors and barristers with international trade and competition concerns.

Professor Hans van Houtte, is currently Professor at the Institute for International Trade Law in Leuven, Belgium
