French Foreign Minister Hervé de Charette has charmed his Italian counterpart Susanna Agnelli.

After lunch in Barcelona, where they attended the Euro-Mediterranean conference, Agnelli told journalists that she had spent a delightful afternoon listening to de Charette's life story. The French minister, she reported, came from a very poor family and had been through thin times. His father was apparently so vehemently opposed to the Republic that he would not even put stamps on the envelopes containing his letters because he could not stomach the idea of licking a stamp that had Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, on the other side.
