Abstract:

This book is the second of two volumes that examine how Member States attempt to co-ordinate their European policies. In this volume, the focus is on national action at the European level.

Contributions by a wide range of scholars investigate the efforts of eleven governments - Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden - in this direction. They examine the structures and processes that the Member States have developed through their Permanent Representations in Brussels and evaluate their effectiveness.

Through a comparative analysis, the book explores the influences that have shaped systems of national co-ordination and assesses the extent to which there has been a convergent response to the administrative challenges posed by membership on the part of Member States or whether a pattern of divergence endures. A comprehensive Introduction and Conclusion are wrapped around the eleven state chapters.

The work will interest students, scholars, researchers, and policy makers in the fields of European Union studies, Politics, and International Affairs.

The companion volume explores the structures and procedures at the domestic level through a comparative analysis of the way in which ten European national governments organise European policy making.
