Abstract:

The growing importance of the EU as a regional force in WTO negotiations, and similar growth by other regional groups, has prompted the perception of a developing new order in world affairs in which regional actors will play an increasingly important role. This work looks at the relationship between two such groups - the ASEAN and the EU.

The work is organised over six substantive chapters plus a final concluding chapter. The first chapter looks at the literature on EU-ASEAN relations and presents a theoretical basis for analysis of the relationship. Chapter two explores the concept that the international order will be much improved if regionalism succeeds in Southeast Asia and that ASEAN and the EU can construct a 'bridge' between developed and developing countries. Chapter three questions the origin of the development cooperation and the direction it will follow if current EU policies remain unchanged. The impact of antidumping policies and the Generalised System of Preferences policy are addressed in chapter four. Countries of Southeast Asia are not easily inclined towards regionalism and this has hampered European investment in the region - this is discussed in chapter five. The difficulties posed by the different approaches to questions of human rights violations are examined in chapter six. A concluding chapter follows to close the work.

The book will interest political economists and students of EU-ASEAN relations.
