Book abstract:

Since the first edition of this book was published in 1996 there have been many significant developments in the European Union. Back then, people were questioning whether EMU would get off the ground - today euro notes and coins are being used within the eurozone. The likelihood of the EU expanding its borders eastwards was also doubted by many in 1996 but the accession process is now well advanced and ten candidate countries are set to join in 2004. However, both EMU and enlargement remain highly topical issues and thus they are both discussed in this book along with other key current issues such as security and defence policy, the Treaty of Nice, the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, Justice and Home Affairs and relations with countries outside Europe.

The book opens with a section which provides an overview of the European Union's development from both the historical and theoretical perspectives as well as a discussion of the Maastricht, Amsterdam and Nice treaties. The EU institutions and policy processes are all examined in section two which also contains a chapter focused on the EU's budget. Section three covers the main policies of the European Union including discussion on the possible reform of CAP, the 'e-Europe initiative' and the promotion of a People's Europe. The final four chapters in this section focus on the EU's relationship with other countries including coverage of its role in the global economy, its development policy, CFSP and the future enlargement.

Robert Jones' teaching experience as Senior Lecturer in European Studies at Sheffield Hallam University is reflected in this book which offers undergraduate students a concise yet accessible introduction to the European Union.
