Book abstract:

This book provides economic and political information on the 89 constituent units of the Russian Federation. It aims to provide background information for anyone studying the Russian Federation or doing business there. The information in the book is supplemented by statistics, maps, and government and administrative addresses for the Russian Federation and its constituent units.

The book has three parts the first of which provides an overview of the Russian Federation as a whole. This section examines the economic perspective of the relationship between the centre and federal units as well as an overview of the economic, political and historical context of the whole country. It includes a chronology of Russia and statistics of the main demographic and economic indicators. The second section provides an overview of each individual federal unit with geographical and demographic details, followed by brief historical details and an outline of the current political situation. Finally, an economic survey provides an overview that includes statistics for gross regional product, transport, agriculture, mining, industry, external trade, foreign investment and employment. The final section indexes the territories by Federal District and Economic Area. A bibliography of relevant publications is also included.
