On 20 October 2013, the British Electoral Commission published their advice on the question to be put to the public in the event of the proposed 2017 referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union.

Richard Berry and Sean Kippin show how their research echoed several criticisms made by Patrick Dunleavy on LSE’s British Politics and Policy blog earlier in 2013. More debate is needed to ensure that the question neutrally makes clear the economic, social and legal implications of a British withdrawal.
