Book abstract:

This work spans the origins of the European Union and its birth pangs in the European Community through to the vision shared by the author of a Federal Europe and ultimate solution of the problem confronting Europe for more than one hundred and thirty years - the German problem. It addresses the collapse of the 'Iron Curtain' and the outdated perceptions of East and West Europe.

The work commences with an analysis of the world of 1945 and the determination of political leaders to forge a new way ahead for Europe and hopefully free of German hegemony. This is followed by chapters that provide a broadly chronological account of the evolution of the Community and its metamorphosis into the European Union and for some visionaries into a Federal Europe. It addresses the European Union post-Maastricht, the introduction of a common currency, and formulation of a common foreign policy and security pact.

The work will interest scholars and students of the European Union and international affairs.
