A new group called Leave Means Leave was launched on the 17 September 2016 to campaign for the United Kingdom to leave the EU’s single market, to end the influence of the European Union on British laws, and to scrap 'free movement' migration.

The group was mainly dominated by Conservative Party eurosceptics and was seen as a tactic to put pressure on the UK Government to negotiate a 'hard Brexit'.

Prime minister Theresa May later dismissed claims that Britain could leave the EU without a trade agreement. Besides internal opposition, Ms May also faced opposition from some leaders of EU member states who threathened to veto any deal which implied restrictions of free movement.
