In the context of the debate across Europe and in many European countries with the issue of the Muslim veil, the prominent United Kingdom Conservative MP (and until recently UK Foreign Secretary) created a stir in an article he wrote in The Daily Telegraph on the 6 August 2018.

Referencing the recent implementation of a law in Denmark that prohibited the use in public places of the full veil (and other accessories) covering the face, Mr Johnson said that while he would not support such a law in the UK but said that the burqa was 'oppressive' andcompared Muslim women in burqas to bank robbers and said they 'look like letter boxes'.

These remarks created a considerable stir within the Conservative Party, Muslim groups and others with people both criticising and supporting Mr Johnson. Some suggested the comments would inflame Islamophobia.
