Towards Balanced Defence Industry in Europe: Main Specificities of Central and Eastern European Defence Industries

The French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS) is one of the main independent European Think Tanks on geopolitical and strategic issues.

IRIS, a public-interest association created in 1991, is a French think tank on geopolitical and strategic issues. It is the only international think tank to have been set up as a totally private initiative in an independent approach. IRIS activities can be divided into four fields: research, organisation of events and meetings, publishing and training.

This article aims to identify specificities of the Central and Eastern European defence industries and to enhance understanding of this particular issue. In doing so, it lays the ground for the formulation of a more common 'balanced' policy to strengthen the EDTIB, to promote equal opportunities and to offer a 'fair chance' for all EU/EDA Member States’ defence industries, in line with the European Council conclusions.
