Towards environmental sustainability? A comparative study of Danish, Dutch and Swedish transport policies in a European context:

This publication is mainly an empirical study of Danish, Dutch and Swedish national transport policies in the period 1987-1997. These countries were selected for their reputation for having well-developed environmental policies and this study focuses on the question of to what extent transport policies have been able to enhance environmental sustainability. Carried out at Aalborg University in Northern Denmark in the period September 1995 to August 1998, its main objectives are: to analyse the theoretical points of departure for a study of this kind; to identify global environmental considerations for national transport policies; to identify, describe and explain changes in stated transport policies in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden in the period 1987-1997; to identify, describe and explain differences between stated passenger transport policies in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden in the period 1987-1997; to explore the relations between national transport policies and European transport policies; to evaluate the results of the national policies in the perspective of environmental sustainability by contrasting stated policies and actual outcomes and to explain the results of the evaluation; and to identify and describe some policy options for promoting the goal of environmentally sustainable transport. Besides the focus on environmental sustainability, the role of the automobile in the transport system is another focal point of the study. The book is structured and organised in accordance with the seven objectives listed above.
