Toxic smog doubles Moscow mortality rate

The death rate in Moscow has doubled due to the toxic smog hanging over the city from wildfires raging around the Russian capital and the worst heatwave since records began, Andrei Seltsovsky, the head of Moscow’s health department, said on the 9 August 2010.

Subsequently, it was announded that the heatwave is likely to cost the economy almost one percent of GDP, according to economists. The summer's drought, forest fires and smog will be significant factors in eroding economic growth.
