Traditional foods of Britain. An inventory: Described as 'a Domesday Book of the nation's traditional shopping basket', included in this inventory are those foods that have been produced in one region or town in Britain for more than three generations and that are still offered on sale to the public. Four hundred regional British foods are highlighted from Dorset Apple Cake to Vimto. The information is taken from part of a survey throughout the Member States of the Union by GEIE Euroterroirs of which this is the British section. The investigation stemmed from a preoccupation in Europe with the quality and origins of foods and the desire to protect them from commercial dilution and dishonest imitation. The chapters are divided by foodstuffs and each individual entry has a short history and factual description including region of production. Included are a list of trade association and interest groups addresses and a comprehensive index. |
