Abstract:

This work arises from a programme of work undertaken at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, designed to develop understanding about the transatlantic trade relationship.

The book is organised in four parts. The first part provides an introductory survey of transatlantic governance and dispute settlement problems. Part two presents a series of case studies undertaken by outstanding experts and practitioners in the area of dispute settlement under the WTO system. The third part presents analytical papers which examine the disputes in the broader context of legal, economic, and political theories of dispute prevention and dispute settlement. Finally, part four offers policy recommendations from EU and US policy makers and academics.

The work will interest scholars, students, researchers and practitioners engaged in transatlantic studies, international relations and EU/WTO/US trade issues.

Ernst-Ulrich Petersmann is Professor of International and European Law at the European University Institute, Florence. Mark A. Pollack is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
