At the Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government, Brussels, Belgium – 25 May 2017 he declined to reaffirm Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty on mutual defence. At the G7 summit in Taormina, 26-27 May 2017 he refused to make compromises, especially on the issue of climate protection.

He also held various bilateral meetings including a meeting with President of the European Council Donald Tusk and the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on the 25 May 2017.
