Tunnel likely to be shut all year

Swiss officials have announced that the St Gotthard road tunnel is unlikely to be reopened until 2002. The European Commission has urged Austria which controls the Brenner, the main alternative route, to relax its environmental controls in order to release the growing build-up of heavy vehicles.
