Turkey issued arrest warrants on the 12 April 2012 for about 30 people over their alleged role in a 'soft' coup in 1997, the latest settling of accounts between the country’s democratically elected government and the military officers who allegedly plotted against it and its predecessors.

The detentions were seen as the latest sign of the widening scope of investigations by Turkish police and prosecutors, which until recently focused almost exclusively on more recent alleged plots against Turkey’s current government, which took office in 2002.
