Abstract:

This book is addressed to the general reader and aims to provide a general introduction to contemporary Turkey.

The first chapter concentrates on the development of Turkey as a modern state and looks at the evolution of national institutions and national identity. Chapter two presents an analysis of Turkish party politics and the struggle to establish democracy against a background of corruption, military intervention and human rights difficulties. The third chapter considers state strategy for economic development and its increasing integration with the world economy. Foreign policy and international relations are the focus of chapter four which underlines the critical importance of Turkey's membership of the European Union and the reform process that candidature demands.

The book will interest scholars and students engaged in European Union studies and European integration topics as well as the general reader for whom the book is designed.
