Turkey prepares for action against IS

The Turkish government received the go ahead from its parliament on the 2 October 2014 to take military action against the IS in Syria and Iraq. The resolution - passed with a three-quarters majority - would also permit foreign troops to use Turkish territory for the operation.

Ankara has the right to protect itself from the terrorist militia, some commentators believed. Others suspected Turkey of pursuing its own interests in neighbouring countries.
