Turkey’s top military commander, General Ilker Basbug has denied reports alleging that the military had been plotting to undermine the country’s popular moderate Islamist government, of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a rare open press conference held on the 26 June 2009 General Basbug vehemently denied that Turkey’s military establishment harboured anyone who would attempt to undermine Turkey’s often fragile democracy.
