The European Court of Justice ruled on 12 July 2001 that the European Commission was not required to take account of the impact of the merger which took place in 1998 in the German coal industry when assessing aid granted by Germany to that industry for 1998 and 1999. UK Coal, formerly RJB Mining, had complained about the subsidies being illegal state aid. |
