Verena Ross, a German national but a director at the UK’s Financial Services Authority, was nominated in February 2011 as executive director – or chief executive – of the new European Securities and Markets Authority, the Paris-based watchdog overseeing financial and securities markets.

This was seen in a move that counters the United Kingdom's concerns about increasing continental influence over trading activities.
