Britain joined forces with France on 15 May 2002 to demand the creation of a powerful post of president of the European Council. The UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, believes that the holder of the post would become the public face and driving force of Europe. Spain is expected to add its support, but Germany has still to add its backing. The European Commission will contest the plans as it wants to preserve its influence.
