it was announced by Ukraine’s general prosecutor Viktor Pshonka on the 18 January 2013 that the country's jailed ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko had been made a suspect in organising a 1990s murder, in a move that would stoke fresh tensions between Ukraine and the west.

The surprise move could further complicate relations with the European Union and US as Ukraine entered a year analysts believe could be decisive in determining whether one of Europe’s biggest nations shifts closer to the EU or tilts back towards Russia.
