Ukraine’s president pardoned on the 7 April 2013 two opposition politicians, partially defusing a stand-off with the European Union over allegedly politically motivated prosecutions that had jeopardised closer relations with the EU.

But there was no immediate sign that President Viktor Yanukovich would fully appease EU leaders by also releasing his fiercest opponent, jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

The pardons were welcomed by EU officials.
